The clear bag rule: 12 by 6 by 12 inches, what the league says and which bags pass the gate
Most stadiums admit only a clear bag, and the size that gets through is written down by the league that started the rule. Here is that rule quoted word for word, the parts people miss at the gate, the arithmetic of what fits in twelve by six by twelve inches, and a table of every Missnine clear bag against the number.

The rule, from the people who wrote it
The clear bag rule is not a stadium habit. It is a league policy, published in one place, and every team stadium applies it with small local additions. The page opens with the reason: a safer environment for the public and faster entry, with exceptions for medically necessary items after inspection. Then it says what may come in.
This includes clear backpacks, clear fanny packs and clear cinch bags that fit within the permissible dimensions.NFL Stadium Game Day Bag Policy, read 4 September 2026
The permissible dimensions are twelve inches by six by twelve, or 30.5 by 15.25 by 30.5 centimetres, and the bag must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC. That single sentence rules out most of a handbag collection and rules in a small set of shapes: a tote, a backpack, a fanny pack, a cinch bag, all clear, all inside the box.
Two lines further down the page catch more people than the size does. The first is about hardware:
No buckles, grommets/hardware or décor can be concealing any part of the bag.NFL Stadium Game Day Bag Policy, read 4 September 2026
A clear bag with a wide leather-look panel across the front is a clear bag that fails this line. The Missnine clear bags keep the trim to the edges, the handles and the strap, and the body stays see-through. The second line is about branding:
Logo can only be on one side of the bag.NFL Stadium Game Day Bag Policy, read 4 September 2026
The page also allows a one-gallon clear freezer bag in place of a purchased bag, and a small non-clear bag no bigger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches, with or without a strap, carried together with the clear one. That small bag is where a wallet or a phone goes when you would rather not display them, and the crossbody bench has a few that fit the number.
What is prohibited is a long list on the same page: coolers, briefcases, non-clear backpacks and fanny packs, diaper bags, cinch bags, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, and any non-clear bag larger than the small-bag size. The medical exceptions are real and are handled at the gate after inspection. Read the team's own page too, because the league says to.
The Missnine clear bench against the rule
Counted from the catalogue at the last update, one row per kind of clear bag, using the length, width and height the maker gives.
| Kind | Bags | Inside 12 × 6 × 12 by the maker's inches |
|---|---|---|
| Clear crossbody and sling bags | 17 | 17 |
| Clear backpacks | 9 | 1 |
| Clear totes | 3 | 1 |
The maker's inches are the outside of the bag laid flat. A soft bag stuffed full rounds out, and a gate steward measures what is in front of them. Pack under the number, not at it.

Twelve by six by twelve, in things
Twelve inches wide, six deep, twelve tall is 864 cubic inches, which sounds like a lot and is not. It is a large phone, a wallet, keys, a small water bottle standing up, a light layer folded once, sunscreen, and not much else. It is not a laptop, not a camera with a lens, not a second pair of shoes.
The six inches is the number that bites. A bag can be twelve wide and twelve tall and still fail when a bottle pushes the front panel past six. The Missnine clear totes are cut a little under the number on every side for that reason, and the crossbody bags are far under it, which leaves room for the bag to bulge.
The rule does not say anything about weight or number of pockets, and it does not care what the trim is made of as long as the trim hides nothing. Pockets on the inside of a clear bag are visible pockets, and they are the way to keep a lipstick from rolling across the bottom in front of the row behind you.

Length, width and height from the maker's data, one row per bag (colourways share a size). 19 sit inside the rule on all three sides, 10 go over on one side and are for the concert, the beach or the office, not the stadium.

Inside the rule means each of the three numbers is at or under twelve, six and twelve. A bag that is over by half an inch on one side is a bag that depends on the steward's mood, and we do not recommend the bet.

The small bag that goes with it
The page allows a second, non-clear bag if it is no bigger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. That is a card wallet, a phone case with a strap, a coin purse. The Missnine crossbody bench has a handful of phone purses that come in under the number, and they solve the one thing a clear bag cannot: privacy for the wallet.
The trick is to check both numbers, because a phone purse that is 4 inches wide and 7 tall fails on height. The pages on this site print length, width and height, and the small-bag rule reads them as the two largest.

Clear backpacks: the same rule standing up
A clear backpack is allowed by name in the policy, and it is the bag that suits a long day, because the weight sits on two straps. The rule is the same box, twelve by six by twelve, and a backpack has the same failure point as a tote: the six-inch depth, which a padded back panel eats into before you have packed anything.
The Missnine clear backpacks are minis, around eight inches wide and ten tall, with a trim in khaki, black or tan and a pom-pom or a tassel on some. They pass the size with room. What they will not do is carry a laptop, and the policy prohibits computer bags anyway.

A game day, packed
The rule says what may come in. It does not say how to pack it, and the first time most people carry a clear bag they discover that the twelve-by-six-by-twelve box holds less than it looks and shows more than they expected. This is the Missnine way to pack one, tested on a season of Sundays.
- The phone and the wallet in the small bag. A non-clear bag under 4.5 by 6.5 inches is allowed alongside the clear one, and it is where the things you would rather not display go.
- The bottle standing up, at the back. A stadium sells water, and an empty reusable bottle passes where a full one may not. Standing, it stays inside the six-inch depth. Lying down, it breaks it.
- Sunscreen and a lip balm in the inside pocket. Loose, they roll to the bottom and sit on the clear panel for the whole game.
- The layer tied to the strap. A sweatshirt does not fit inside the box with anything else. It goes over the shoulder or round the waist, and the rule does not count clothing.
- Nothing with a blade, nothing in glass. The prohibited list is on the same page as the size rule, and the clear bag makes both easy for the steward to see.
Packed like that, a Missnine clear tote at the full size goes through the gate in the time it takes to lift it, which is the whole reason the rule exists.
Trim colours on the clear bench
The colour group of each clear bag's trim, counted per bag from the maker's colour name.
| Trim colour | Bags |
|---|---|
| khaki | 14 |
| black | 5 |
| white | 3 |
| grey | 2 |
| tan | 2 |
| blue | 2 |
| pink | 1 |
Khaki and black lead, because a neutral trim reads as a purse rather than a novelty at the gate. The pink and the leopard-strap versions are the ones for the fan who wants the bag noticed.
Clear bags beyond the stadium
The stadium wrote the rule, and other places borrowed it. Arenas for concerts run a clear bag policy on most tour dates, and their sizes are usually the same twelve by six by twelve or smaller. Some school districts require clear backpacks, at a size that varies by district and is usually larger. Airports do not require one, but a clear crossbody goes through security without being opened, which is a reason people fly with them.
In every one of those places the method is the one above: read the venue's number, read the three numbers on the bag page, and pack under the depth. A Missnine clear tote that passes the stadium passes almost everywhere the rule is borrowed, and a clear backpack that passes the stadium is too small for most school rules, which want a full-size bag. Read the venue.
What a clear bag does not do
It does not hide anything. That is the design, and it is worth saying plainly, because the first time you carry one you will notice the row behind you can read the label on your sunscreen. Pockets on the inside, a small non-clear wallet, and a lining colour that matches the trim are the three ways to make that comfortable.
PVC scratches. Keys in the same compartment as the front panel will leave marks in a season. It stiffens in the cold and softens in the heat, and a bag left in a hot car will keep the shape it was folded into. None of that affects the rule. All of it affects how the bag looks in October.
And the rule is the league's, not the bag's. A bag that meets the number on this site meets the league's number. A venue that runs a stricter rule, or a concert promoter with its own, is a page you read before you leave the house.
How to check a bag before you buy it
Read the three numbers on the page and compare each one with twelve, six and twelve. Then read the trim: the body must be clear, and hardware must hide nothing. Then decide what goes in, and if it includes a wallet you would rather not show, add a small bag under 4.5 by 6.5 inches. That is the whole method, and it takes a minute.
The Missnine clear bench prints all of it. The rule lives on the league's page, quoted above with the date we read it, and the team pages add the local details.
